Vladimir Putin gave the Russian boxer For Vsevolod Shumkov cruel instruction, Sport24 website news.
Putin awarded Shumkov with a medal at the Russian state award ceremony. After the ceremony, the two posed for photos, and the athletes standing next to them joked that a boxer needs to keep his fists in check and stop biting his opponents in the ring.
The president disagreed.
– Let him bite, and bite some more. Let them be afraid, Putin said.
The Russian media suspected that Putin’s “joking” was a comparison to Mike Tyson, who would bite off Evander Holyfield’s ear in 1997 during the two’s second encounter.
Šumkov, 24, is a successful boxer who has won the amateur world championship and the European lightweight championship. His record as an amateur is 84–11 and as a professional he is 3–0.
