Berlin’s Governing Mayor Franziska Giffey has sharply criticized the ongoing series of street blockades by climate activists.
“It is legitimate to stand up for climate protection and against food waste. However, the way this is happening in Berlin crosses borders and is unacceptable,” said the SPD politician on Tuesday at the request of the German Press Agency.
“If emergency services and emergency services are actively hindered in their important work, this is not covered by the right to freedom of expression or freedom of demonstration,” said Giffey.
“Actions of this kind endanger Berliners. I thank the police for their important and necessary intervention to bring the situation on the A100 under control.”
Activists from the “Essen Retten – Leben Retten” initiative, who call themselves the “last generation”, have recently repeatedly blocked streets and motorways in Berlin. They are calling for a law against food waste and an immediate change in agriculture to reduce greenhouse gases from agriculture.

On Tuesday morning, several blockades on the exits of the A100 city motorway in Tempelhof caused long traffic jams. In the meantime, the Britz motorway tunnel in Neukölln has also been closed, according to the traffic information center.
The police temporarily arrested 13 demonstrators or determined their personal details for reports. Several of them were already known to the police because of previous blockades.
