The fraud affair surrounding Norway’s ski jumpers resulted in drastic punishments for three ex-officials from the FIS. There is criticism in her home country and a CAS objection is on the horizon.
“I’m a little surprised because I think it’s strict,” said ski jumping icon Maren Lundby to “NRK” with a view to the sentence announced by the FIS for Magnus Brevig, Thomas Lobben and Adrian Lobben.
The trio has long been sidelined for their role in the tampered with jump suits scandal at the 2025 Nordic World Ski Championships in Trondheim. The FIS imposed a ban of 18 months on each of the three, as well as a fine of around 5,000 euros each.
Lundby pointed out that in the past, only warnings or no sanctions were given for similar offenses. Against this background, the punishment for Brevig, Lobben and Lobben was “unfair,” according to the 31-year-old, and they “should have served as a deterrent example.”
In principle, Lundby explained, it is good that measures are being taken against attempts at cheating in ski jumping, “but I still feel it is very unfair to them. So there are mixed feelings.”
Ski jumping: appeal to CAS? Lawyer comments
Norway’s ski jumping boss Jan-Erik Aalbu expressed reservations about the FIS ruling. “We have not been involved in this process in the last ten months, so I cannot comment on it,” he told NRK.
According to their lawyer Pal Kleven, Brevig, Lobben and Lobben are considering appealing against the punishment before the International Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), “but this must be balanced against the fact that the ban period will probably have expired before the CAS has completed its examination of the case,” as the lawyer emphasized.
Brevig worked as the national coach of Norway’s ski jumpers at the 2025 World Cup, Lobben as an assistant coach. Livelten, in turn, was responsible for the material that triggered the whole scandal in the first place.
The trio was taken out of circulation by the FIS in the spring. The three Norwegians have been officially banned since March 12th. This time will be counted towards your 18-month ban.
