Well-known criminal lawyer Walter Damen and his colleague Cato Van Hoof want suspects who have not yet been definitively convicted to no longer be locked up in prison. They would have to stay at home (or at another address) with an electronic ankle bracelet during their pre-trial detention. “A stay in prison should become the exception for these people,” says lawyer Damen, who has submitted a proposal to change the law to all MPs.
