In the qualification at the Grand Prix of Australia, the Brit narrowly prevails and directly sends a sign to the competition. Saturday is unfortunate for the only German in the field.

A first small exclamation mark at the start of the season of Formula 1: Lando Norris starts at the Grand Prix of Australia on Sunday. The McLaren pilot secured the first pole position of the year in qualifying on Saturday in Melbourne and thus goes to the race at the very front (Sunday from 5 a.m. in the live ticker at T-Online).

Norris prevailed in a highly exciting qualifying in front of his team -mate Oscar Piatri and world champion Max Verstappen (Red Bull). Lewis Hamilton drove eighth for Ferrari behind his new team -mate Charles Leclerc – disappointing for Scuderia.

RB pilot Yuki Tsunoda, who drove to fifth place, made a surprise in front of Williams driver Alex Albon, who also cut unexpectedly. For Nico Hülkenberg, on the other hand, the run was quickly ended, the only German in the driver field was eliminated in the clean in the first qualifying section, starting from 17th place.

“With the feeling in the curves and on the brakes” it didn’t fit, said Hülkenberg at Sky. “I don’t feel quite at home in the car. This is normal and logical when you change the team and have a new car. At the end of the day we just got a little bit.”

Hülkenberg’s teammate Gabriel Bortoleto (Brazil) surprised: he survived Q1 and took 15th place. The qualifying was disappointing for Liam Lawson. The new team -mate of Verstappen was eliminated early after several driving errors, for the New Zealander it was only enough for the 18th place.
