Prosecutor Eduardo Taiano grew up in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of La Boca. His parents were faithful to the Methodist Church located at 600 Olavarría Street and he went to the William Morris Primary School of the same religious orientation. There he had an adventure companion of the same age, Gabriel Cavallo, with whom he maintained a friendship that lasts to this day. They studied law together and pursued a judicial career until they reached Comodoro Py. Gabriel Cavallo became a judge and then retired to private practice as a lawyer. Taiano continued as prosecutor. Today they continue to see each other as friends, but also from a professional point of view, because Cavallo is an influential lawyer in the Comodoro Py criminal jurisdiction. To the point that he is a defender of Sergio Morales, one of the defendants in Libragate, the case that investigates the crypto scam in which President Javier Milei participated and that has Taiano in its sights for his work as a prosecutor in the file.
Taiano became involved in a controversy following a leak from journalist Natalia Volosin, former head of the DATIP (Directorate of Technological Support for Criminal Investigation), a unit that assists prosecutors with technological issues. Volosin said on his networks that there was already a result of the analysis of crypto trader Mauricio Novelli’s phone that had not yet been shown to the parties and accused prosecutor Taiano of “having hidden” that transcendental evidence. The prosecutor in Comodoro Py has a reputation for being submissive to power and for “sleeping” sensitive files.
This triggered a judicial presentation by one of the plaintiffs for the journalist to be called for a testimonial statement, but everything was rejected when Taiano was informed that an administrative summary had been initiated to detect the leak. Finally, it was detected that two DATIP employees would have been the accomplices (today they are being investigated in another case that is moving faster than the Libra file). Due to this episode, Taiano decided to issue a statement clarifying that the steps of the process were being completed and that the expert opinion was available to the parties before the leak. Even from the prosecution, mischievously, they began to slip that the leaks are functional to the defense strategy: now they are asking for the expert opinion to be annulled because having been leaked would have broken the chain of custody.
Taiano faces this file with an extra addition. His work was monitored by a congressional commission pushed by the opposition, which seeks to verify Milei’s level of involvement in the Libra scam that was launched on February 14, 2025. Taiano’s work in this file is being closely observed from all points of view. Even from the politician. At the beginning of the case, it had raised suspicions that his eldest son, Federico, had been a Milei official until April of last year at the head of an office that was in charge of managing the assets that entered the State as a result of confiscations. His role depended on the Chief of Staff.
But Taiano’s work is also seen through the prism of the prosecutor’s own career, who had hot files for political power in his hands and who always moved forward with the handbrake on.
Currently, the file is missing a section of the DATIP report to analyze and with that, the prosecutor would be in a position to take a step further and call some of those involved in the case to testify. It has been more than a year since this case began and still no one has been called to investigate. Comodoro Py maintains that, to counteract his reputation as a timekeeper, Taiano could summon him to testify against Novelli and then move forward with a possible request for prosecution. But that would be futurology. The prosecutor prefers to mature his reflections.
Background. In the first years of Kirchnerism, Taiano was the prosecutor in the case for the enrichment of Néstor and Cristina Kirchner. He promoted the case, which was initially under the orbit of Judge Juan José Galeano, which later passed to Ercolini, who ended up dismissing the marriage. Taiano had the possibility of appealing, but he did nothing. What happened? There are those who attribute to the “procyclical movement of Comodoro Py” that, at the beginning of each government, it tends to be less bellicose than at the end. Another version is that Taiano would have been pressured through the kidnapping of his son Federico, which happened during the window of time he had to appeal. According to the chronicles of those years, Federico was kidnapped for half an hour on Monday, March 28, 2005. The incident was never linked to his work in the case until a few years later.
