Jans Kelder stands proudly next to his six-month-old goat. “This is Charlotte van de Swinre Stee. A special goat, because she has dots. That is very rare in the Netherlands. Originally, that dot was only found in Drenthe. I also live in Drenthe and I was lucky that this goat had this year was born.”

Charlotte and dozens of other goats will be inspected on Saturday during the Dutch Landgoat Inspection in Zwinderen.

“The Dutch land goat used to be on the Aap Noot Mies reading board,” says Bert Bouwman, chairman of the Landgeitenfokkersclub Drenthe. “The land goat is a sober breed that is naturally quite strong. The animal can be outside all year round and a shelter is sufficient. The land goat does not need a luxurious stable.”

Things did not go well for the Dutch land goat for a while, but now there are a few thousand walking around in the Netherlands again. “A few people have stood up who have bred quite a bit with the goats so that there is now a broad collection in the Netherlands again.”

One of the judges in Zwinderen is Johan Wesselink. Among other things, he looks at the development of the animal, the horns, the coat, the color and the size of the goat. The lambs do not receive any points yet, but, for example, only a sufficient or a very good. The goats and bucks get points.
