Counter goals kill FC Volendam against RKC Waalwijk

FC Volendam was unable to score any points on a visit to RKC Waalwijk. With four goals on the counter, RKC defeated the Palingboeren 4-1. Francesco Antonucci’s goal did not hurt. The battle for sixteenth place with Excelsior and FC Emmen is therefore far from being decided.

The beginning of Volendam was dramatic. Yassin Oukili got too much space and hit hard behind Filip Stankovic. Within three minutes, the Palingboers were behind: 1-0. Robert Mühren and Gaetano Oristanio both became dangerous, but goalkeeper Etienne Vaessen kept his goal clean. That was not the case with Stankovic. The Serbian goalkeeper saw two previous attempts by Florian Jozefzoon go wide, but the third one was a hit. The attacker pinned the ball over Stankovic from close range: 2-0.

If Volendam still had hope for a result, it was dashed into the ground immediately after the break. Mats Seuntjens had shot just wide in the first half. This time he was accurate: 3-0. Remarkably enough, that was the third goal, which RKC scored on the counter. The substitute Franco Antonucci scored from nowhere from a long shot: 3-1. He came on at half-time for Deron Payne, who made his starting debut.

Oskar Buur and Brian Plat were not fit enough. In the final phase, Julian Lobete added even more salt to the wound. The substitute Spaniard had a free passage and simply shot the ball behind Stankovic: 4-1. Due to the hard defeat, the battle for sixteenth place remains very exciting. FC Emmen and Excelsior are still playing this weekend and can go over Volendam.
