‘Costs reconstruction Palestinian areas more than fifty billion’

To restore the destruction caused during the war in Gaza and the West Bank, an estimated almost 51 billion euros is needed. This is apparent from a Tuesday published report From a joint research group of the European Union, the United Nations and the World Bank.

The same research group already predicted in April 2024 that it would be 18 billion euros, but then the analysis only focused on the physical infrastructure. In the new report alone, the damage to Palestinian houses – 292,000 are destroyed – at fifteen billion.

The research group bases the figures on, among other things, satellite images, (social) media messages and databases of the United Nations Agencies in Gaza and the West Bank.

‘Restrictions for assistance’

Healthcare (6.6 billion in repair costs), industry and commerce (4 billion) and education (3.8 billion) have also had large blows. In the coming three years, an amount of nearly twenty billion euros will be needed to ‘stabilize’ ‘essential services’ and to free up the way for recovery, the research group writes.

However, the researchers warn that the circumstances in Gaza are currently so bad that a large -scale aid action is difficult to start. The area is not safe for care providers and there are limitations for which people and goods Gaza income, where the researchers seem to refer to the Israeli control of the borders of Gaza.

The World Bank estimated the total gross domestic product of Palestine in 2022 – before the war – at around nineteen billion euros.
