MÜNSTER (dpa-AFX) – There is a new lawsuit against mining in the Hambach open-cast brown coal mine. The Association for the Environment and Nature Conservation Germany (BUND) has turned to the North Rhine-Westphalian Higher Administrative Court (OVG) in Münster. The Federal-State Association of North Rhine-Westphalia considers the new main operating plan for RWE Power AG, which has been in effect since January 1, 2025, to be incorrect. The OVG in Münster confirmed receipt of the lawsuit on Friday.
The state is being sued because the Arnsberg district government, as the supervisory authority, approved the plan. According to the BUND, the main point of attack is the dredging of the so-called Manheim Bay in the next three years. This would destroy an important biotope network. The country has not seriously examined alternatives to mining. The environmentalists also want to use urgent proceedings to prevent possible clearing work in the coming days.
The Hambach Forest represents years of protests surrounding the Hambach open-cast brown coal mine. North Rhine-Westphalia wants to phase out coal-fired power generation early in 2030./lic/DP/mis
