Corona-positive US bobsleigh pilot elected flag bearer

American bobsleigh pilot and medal favorite Elana Meyers Taylor has been selected as the flag bearer for the US Olympic team.

However, since the 37-year-old is in isolation due to a positive corona test, she will be represented at the opening ceremony of the Winter Games in Beijing on Friday by speed skater Brittany Bowe, who will carry the flag with curler John Shuster.

“Being chosen as the flag bearer by my peers is the greatest honor of my career,” said Meyers Taylor. “While I can’t carry the flag and come in with the rest of Team USA, Brittany deserves the opportunity to lead our delegation on my behalf.”

Meyers Taylor reported her infection on social networks on Tuesday. Two days after arriving in Beijing on January 27, she tested positive for the virus on January 29. She has no symptoms and is in a quarantine hotel. Her husband and son are also infected, she told USA Today.
