EHF reacts unilaterally
What did the EHF do? It expanded the options for nominating players during the European Championship. And it significantly shortened the 14-day quarantine period for infected players. You can now take a free test after five days and are then eligible to play again after two negative PCR tests in a row.
These measures had one goal above all: to avoid game cancellations. Teams with many corona cases should also be able to continue participating – the tournament should run until the final.
Incomprehensible waiver of tournament bubble
Oddly enough, what the European Handball Federation did not do was try to improve protection against infection. Proven means were on the serving plate. At the 2021 World Cup in Egypt, a strict tournament bubble, daily tests and empty ranks contributed to the fact that hardly any participants were infected during the tournament. That was extremely important at that time in January without vaccination protection.
Now, a vaccination year later, everyone involved in the European Handball Championship has protection against severe Covid 19 courses. This significantly defuses the health risks, but the basic principle still applies: doing high-performance sports with a viral infection is not a good idea.
