Major offensive for AI infrastructure: NVIDIA and Corning join forces

Industry giants NVIDIA and Corning have entered into a far-reaching technology partnership to massively increase production of advanced optical connectivity solutions in the USA. According to the corresponding press release, the goal is to provide the necessary hardware for the next generation of AI infrastructure. Since modern AI workloads require the use of thousands of GPUs, high-performance fiber optic connectivity is essential to transmit massive amounts of data at the speed of light. Corning acts as a strategic partner, providing the optical infrastructure that is essential for the operation of large-scale NVIDIA data centers and so-called “AI factories”.

Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA, emphasizes the historic dimension of this cooperation: “AI is driving the largest infrastructure expansion of our time – and offers a unique opportunity to revitalize American manufacturing and supply chains,” said Huang. “Together with Corning, we are shaping the future of computing with advanced optical technologies – laying the foundation for an AI infrastructure where intelligence moves at the speed of light while continuing the proud tradition of ‘Made in America’.”

Massive expansion of US manufacturing

As part of this cooperation, Corning is massively pushing forward the expansion of US production: capacities for optical connection technology are to be increased tenfold and fiber optic production is to be increased by more than 50 percent. For this purpose, three state-of-the-art plants are to be built in North Carolina and Texas.

Wendell P. Weeks, Chairman and CEO of Corning, sees the collaboration as much more than just a technological contract: “What NVIDIA is doing is simply extraordinary – not only for the future of artificial intelligence, but also for the American high-tech manufacturing industry,” said Wendell P. Weeks. “Their commitment is directly driving the expansion of our U.S. manufacturing operations and creating over 3,000 new, high-paying jobs for American workers. This partnership proves that AI is not just a technology. It is a manufacturing success story, and it’s happening here in the United States. Together with NVIDIA, we are ensuring that the key technologies for AI are designed, engineered and manufactured in America.”

Replace copper?

The technological cooperation between NVIDIA and Corning marks a turning point in the architecture of modern data centers. It would be possible to gradually replace conventional copper cabling – for example the around 5,000 cables in NVIDIA’s “Vera Rubin” rack systems – with highly efficient fiber optic solutions, as CNBC explains. The advantage lies in physics: While conventional copper wires conduct electrons, glass fibers transmit data in the form of photons. According to Corning CEO Wendell P. Weeks, the movement of photons uses five to twenty times less energy than conventional electron transport.

This is how the stocks react

Investors are reacting favorably to the new alliance between NVIDIA and Corning. In pre-market US trading, the shares are going up. While NVIDIA shares temporarily rose by 1.89 percent to 200.21 US dollars on the NASDAQ premarket, Corning’s shares rose by an impressive 18.86 percent via the NYSE and recently cost 192.67 US dollars.
