Convicted Promes in Dubai, Public Prosecution Service is ‘informed’

Quincy Promes is currently in Dubai to celebrate his 32nd birthday. This can be seen on his Instagram page. Promes was sentenced to 18 months in prison in June for stabbing his cousin, but because he plays football in Russia he cannot be arrested. The Netherlands does have an extradition treaty with Dubai. The Public Prosecution Service informs NH that it is aware of Promes’ presence. It is not clear whether he will also be arrested in the short term.

Footballer Quincy Promes was sentenced to a year and a half in prison in June for stabbing his cousin at a family party. According to the court in Amsterdam, he was guilty of serious assault. Both the footballer and the judiciary appealed.

Promes stabbed his cousin in the leg in the summer of 2020 after an argument at a birthday party. The reason was an old conflict over a stolen chain. The former Ajax player, who also played dozens of times for the Dutch national team, was not present at that statement.

Promes has now been spotted internationally. The Public Prosecution Service says it is aware that the attacker is currently in Dubai. “We will not say anything further about this at this time,” said a spokesperson.

Golden chain

Images distributed via social media, and also shared via his own account, show how Promes receives, among other things, a gold chain from London’s A Jewelers. “Finally,” the footballer responds. The chain has a pendant with the word ‘Mask’ and the text ‘Touch this you die’ (Whoever arrives here, dies, ed.) is engraved on the back.

Quincy Promes has been playing for Spartak Moscow in Russia for years, a country with which the Netherlands does not have an extradition treaty. He could be arrested in Dubai. The Public Prosecution Service does not want to say whether the Public Prosecution Service has now contacted the authorities there.

Cocaine smuggling

The stabbing case came to light because the former Ajax player had been bugged for some time as he is also a suspect in large-scale cocaine smuggling. In those conversations he gave details about the family feud, which earned him a prison sentence of 1.5 years. In September, the footballer was controversial in Russia because he was suspected of having paid bribes to free friends who were detained on suspicion of drug trafficking.

Cleerdin & Hamer, the law firm representing Promes, has been asked to confirm that their client is currently in Dubai, but they have not yet responded.
