Controversy in the AFI: an event with former spies was suspended

The call drew attention because it was handled with little secrecy. Former agents of the Federal Intelligence Agency received a message announcing that on October 5, at 9 in the morning, they would be awarded a medal for their services to the country. It was not going to be a massive act, but they could bring a guest and it was clarified that there would be “catering”. Each agent, in addition, was assigned an order number, which would serve to speed up the organization of the event. , the party was spoiled at the last minute: before the leaks, the AFI decided to suspend it.At the close of this edition, many of the agents who had been informally invited by whatsapp had not yet received the news of the cancellation and were still preparing their suit of gala.

A striking fact was that the act would not be held at the AFI headquarters, nor in the French mansion of the National Intelligence School in Recoleta. This time, it would be in the Circle of the Air Force, a space close to the current head of the AFI, Agustín Rossi, who was Minister of Defense.

This type of act is usually handled with greater confidentiality, but this time it became a topic of conversation between different former agents who conveyed their indignation because it left them exposed so that any curious person could go to the medal ceremony. “On Wednesday at 9 in the morning, everyone who enters the circle of the Air Force is obviously going to be former agents,” complained one of those summoned.

Among the data given to the spies was a WhatsApp message: “They are starting to deliver the medals for service in the ‘secret’. There will be a feast. Then I’ll send you the phone so you can find out your case. There was the telephone number for the AFI switchboard with an internal number and the contact name of the person who would give him the details of the ceremony: Agent Anita. A peculiarity of the messages is that the old AFI agents continue to call them “la secre”, by its former name: Intelligence Secretariat.

The medals were divided into two types: former officers with 30 years of service would be awarded a silver medal, and those with more than 31 years of service would be awarded a gold medal. This decoration was paid by each agent throughout his career. A part of the salary was deducted for the making of the goldsmith’s piece.

In previous years, the agents who retired, before leaving, announced that they were going to go get their medal and went through the Intelligence School. They gave their name and an agent gave them to them, without further thanks.

This time, the act was going to be more ceremonious, but it would lack the secrecy that surrounds the profession and that perhaps ended up frustrating him. Some were going to enjoy the moment and the reunion with old colleagues, but others would be uncomfortable because they enjoy more the low profile and continuing to move in the shadows, as if they had never retired.
