Eugen Polanski, coach of Borussia Mönchengladbach

As of: May 27, 2026 • 8:05 p.m

Bundesliga soccer team Borussia Mönchengladbach is sticking with head coach Eugen Polanski despite a mixed season. The club announced this on Wednesday (May 27, 2026).

“We have decided to start the new season with Eugen,” said sports director Rouven Schröder. At the same time, the 50-year-old emphasized: “There will be no ‘business as usual’.”

“Not an ideal season”

The decision for Polanski, who still has a contract until 2028, was made after intensive discussions within the club’s committees. “We had controversial discussions,” said the sports director. The “Fohlen-Elf” had the last season in the Bundesliga Finished twelfth in the table and only managed to stay in the league on the third-to-last matchday.

“It certainly wasn’t an ideal season,” admitted Schröder. The analysis was an “open and clear collaboration”. “But the basic trust is there to do better,” said Schröder, who avoided making a public commitment to the coach after the last match day.

New coaching team for Polanski

Polanski, who took over his first coaching position in the Bundesliga from Gerardo Seoane on September 15th, will remain head coach, but there will be changes in the coaching bench. “We will build a new coaching team around Eugen, get new impressions from outside and more content,” emphasized Schröder. He did not mention any names or how many positions would be filled.

The sporting route is clear: The squad will still change and there will also be departures, but: “We want to play a certain type of football so that we can all go home happy more often. We will have the squad to be more offensive,” said the sports director.

Three new signings have already been signed

With midfielder Enzo Leopold (Hannover 96), goalkeeper Daniel Batz (FSV Mainz 05) and defender David Herold (Karlsruher SC), three new additions have already been presented since the end of the season in mid-May.

Borussia fans will be able to watch Polanski begin his first pre-season preparation as Bundesliga head coach at a public training session on July 12th at the earliest. The training camp will then take place at Tegernsee from August 2nd.
