The continental association is losing its long-time Secretary General – who recently attracted sharp criticism.
African football is not calming down: In the current turmoil surrounding the revocation of Senegal’s Africa Cup victory, Veron Mosengo-Omba has now resigned from his position as Secretary General of the African Football Association Caf. The 66-year-old was previously under increasing pressure.
Mosengo-Omba stated: “After more than 30 years of international professional career dedicated to promoting a game that connects, educates and creates hope, I have decided to step down from my position as General Secretary of the Caf.” The previous competition director, Samson Adamu, will take over his duties.
Within the Caf, Mosengo-Omba was considered controversial, not least because he remained in office despite exceeding the age limit of 63. He himself described his resignation as “retirement”. Nevertheless, he is expected to run for president of the football association of his home country, the Democratic Republic of Congo, in the upcoming election.
Mosengo-Omba’s withdrawal from the Caf comes at a time when confidence in the leadership of the continental association is weakened. The globally criticized decision to strip Senegal of the Africa Cup of Nations title and instead award the trophy to the defeated Moroccans also created tensions and disagreements within the continental association. There are also calls for investigations into alleged corruption within the caf.
