Controversial artwork in Zedelgem has been removed

But because the Latvians fought with the Nazis against the Russians, the municipality actually honors war crimes, the criticism sounded. The municipality of Zedelgem previously decided to give the Brivibaplein, where the artwork is located, its original name: Perdenbilk.

In November last year, an international group of historians came together at the request of the municipality to provide independent and substantiated advice about the future of the Latvian Bijenkorf and the further public development of the POW camp in Vloethemveld. After the advice of the experts, it was decided to remove the artwork. The city council wants to put the discussion to rest for now. (read more below the photo)

Annick Vermeulen, Mayor of Zedelgem: “On May 31, we removed that artwork, and it is currently at our technical department in Zedelgem. We mainly want a cooling phase. Take the time to relax and then look again with all parties involved. about how and where the artwork can be put back.”

The Latvian ambassador has already expressed his displeasure to the foreign minister. He calls the removal of the statue unacceptable.
