Contractor lends 90,000 euros to a friend for a rotten house

Willem and Mylène were devastated when they discovered that the wood in their house in Werkendam had been eaten by a cellar fungus. They didn’t have enough money to put the house back in order. Good friend Nander came to the family’s aid. The contractor completes the job without being paid the full amount of 90,000 euros.

Nander Sonnema received a call from good friend Willem during his holiday. “He said his house was about to collapse. At first I thought he was joking, but then he started crying.”

The contractor promised Willem that everything would be fine and knew what that promise meant. “I knew he didn’t have enough money. But there was a family standing there with their soul under their arm. If the bank doesn’t want to give them a loan, I will.”

Because a few weeks ago Willem’s budget ran out. “But he will still have to go into his house. We will finish it and wait a little longer for the money.”

“I had some doubts and discussed it with my girlfriend.”

The amount involved is approximately 90,000 euros. “We are putting our shoulders to the wheel for now. We assume that Willem will also do the same to eventually raise the money,” says Nander.

But isn’t he crazy for lending such a large amount to a friend? “I had some doubts and discussed it with my girlfriend. But when we are on the street as a family with two children, I also hope that others will help us. Whoever does good, meets with good.”

Willem is very happy with the help he has received. “Having a friend do this for you…” he says with tears in his eyes. “I will be grateful to Nander for the rest of my life. I never expected that we would be able to sleep in our own house again after Christmas.”

“Every morning my daughter comes to my bedside and asks if I’m going to the house to finish it.”

The family has been sleeping in an apartment for a while now and their daughter in particular has difficulty with that. “Every morning my daughter comes to my bedside and asks me to go to the house to finish it. Then there will be tears in your eyes.”

Willem hopes with a crowdfunding to get the amount faster. A large part of the repair has already been financed. “We have been offered so much help. From a bathroom specialist who had a nice price for a new bathroom to someone who came and laid a floor for free. We are very grateful to everyone.”
