According to a survey by management consultancy Alix-Partners, a third of Germans plan to spend less money in 2026. Only around one in eight expects higher expenses. “The austerity measures are becoming more severe,” says Alix managing director Markus Schmid.

According to the study, Germans want to save money in the coming year, particularly when it comes to cosmetics, fashion, leisure, travel and gastronomy. 22 percent of consumers planned to reduce spending on beauty and cosmetics. Only 8 percent planned to spend more.

There is also restraint when traveling and going to restaurants. According to the survey, if additional money were available, 33 percent of Germans would spend it primarily on travel, while 34 percent would simply save it. Only 6 percent want to spend more on restaurants.

According to the information, the study is based on a survey of 2,011 consumers in Germany, which was carried out between September and November.
