If his bigger dream was to play in the Bundesliga, he would have been with a Bundesliga club by now.
Such a statement is of course complete nonsense. What the player wants is just one factor. His current club also has a say and there must also be an interested club. And that and its perspective must appeal to the player. The fact that he still plays for Hertha doesn’t even begin to rule out the fact that the Bundesliga is his biggest dream.
By the way, Reese could already be playing in the Bundesliga if things had gone differently. When he signed with Hertha, it was assumed that he would sign with a first division club. And later on, the negotiations with Freiburg were said to have been quite advanced before he injured himself quite seriously, which meant the issue was off the table. At least that’s what I read.
I think that Reese is actually in a very difficult position: On the one hand, he is too good for the 2nd Bundesliga. But he hasn’t been able to prove himself in the 1st Bundesliga yet and he’s now at an advanced age. The first division teams are becoming a little more cautious. And then there is the financial situation and by that I don’t necessarily mean his salary. He could make compromises in order to fulfill his dream. I mean above all the transfer fee. Hertha won’t let him go below a certain pain threshold. I think 10 million, as mentioned in the article, is realistic. Only: The Bundesliga clubs that could easily pay that probably have less need for him, and the clubs that would be considered in terms of sport could have a problem paying such a transfer fee.
I would put his transfer fee somewhere between 5 and 10 million euros (more on the lower end)
Ten million rather than five million, as the article also states as the pain threshold. Why should Hertha let him go for 5 million? That would be crazy for the league’s top scorer, who has scored consistently over the last three years and still has a long contract. If no club wants to pay that, it won’t be to Hertha’s detriment. It’s not like Hertha is dependent on selling Reese. But from Hertha’s perspective, five million would be wasted, would weaken us sportingly and would not help us financially to the extent that it could be argued.
