The municipality of Emmen will start the long-awaited redevelopment of the Dordsestraat next month. The largest intervention is the conversion of two intersections (with Emmalaan and Wilhelminastraat/Noordbargerstraat) into a priority square without traffic lights.

The municipality is splitting the work into two phases. First, the part around Emmalaan near the Meerveld neighborhood will be tackled. According to councilor Jan Bos, the job has been put out to tender in Europe and has now been licensed to the Sallandse Wegenbouw company. “They have registered for just under 3.6 million. This is within the budget,” said the councilor.

Work will start in February and be completed in October. The steam then continues directly to the intersection with Wilhelminastraat and Noordbargerstraat near the Bargermeer neighborhood. Residents will be informed about the project this month.

The municipality presented the plans for the redesign in the spring of 2023. In the current traffic situation, the flow of car traffic is not optimal. This often results in traffic jams.

Dordsestraat will therefore be reduced from a four-lane road to a two-lane road without traffic lights between the two future squares. The plan also includes safe crossings for both cyclists and walkers. One of the most infamous bicycle crossings at Dordseswarsstraat will disappear.
