The Mexican federation has confirmed the separation from national coach Gerardo Martino after the early end of the World Cup. “His contract has expired. He knows that the negative environment and the failure make it impossible for him to continue,” said association president Yon de Luisa on Thursday at a press conference in the Mexican World Cup quarter in Al-Chaur near Doha. “We value him as a capable coach,” said sporting director Jaime Ordiales. “But in football it’s the results that count.”
Martino had announced his departure after beating Saudi Arabia 2-1 in the decisive group game. The 60-year-old Argentinian’s contract expired after the World Cup. Despite the victory, Mexico was eliminated in the preliminary round of a World Cup for the first time since 1978. “We were just one goal away from progressing. It’s a defeat,” De Luisa said. “We failed the fans and our country.”

Even after the separation from Martino, the association wants to continue working on the worst World Cup performance since not participating in 1990. “We will do an in-depth analysis over the next 60 days. We will think about structural changes,” said the association president. The team was “not competitive” in Qatar. “We have to draw the right conclusions from this and improve.”
