“Concrete stop threatens to become a concrete flop”: 10 more football fields are paved every day in Flanders

The ‘construction shift’ that the Flemish government introduced in 2016 does not really seem to have an effect on more economical use of space. On average, more than five hectares of paving was added per day between 2013 and 2021. This is evident from the 2024 Concrete Report of Natuurpunt en Breekijzer, an association and knowledge center for softening in Flanders. Environment Minister Zuhal Demir (N-VA) says that the figure is outdated and that the ‘space take rate’ has now decreased to 3.8 hectares per day.
