Concerns in Finland on the eve of the tennis World Cup qualifiers: “Knock on wood we hope”

Finland will face Portugal in the World Cup qualifiers on Friday and Saturday.

Finland has one concern during the Davis Cup national match to be played at the Gatorade Center in Turku. The second player of the team Otto Virtanen had to end his challenger tour tournament in France last week with a forfeit loss due to a sprained ankle.

– Going into the week, Oto’s ankle was a question mark. Now it is in such condition that Otto was named to play on Friday, Finland’s captain Jarkko Nieminen tells.

– We feared the worst, but Otto has now been able to train anyway. Knock on wood, of course we hope that there won’t be any setbacks and that we don’t have to compromise on tactics or anything.

A year ago in Espoo, Finland beat Argentina at the same stage and advanced for the first time to the world’s 16 best tennis countries, i.e. to the final tournament of the World Cup. Sensaatio-Suomi stopped only in November in Malaga in the semi-finals against Australia.

Now Finland is aiming to repeat its historic trick.

Otto Virtanen opens the World Cup qualifier on Friday with a match against Portugal’s number one player Nuno Borges. Virtanen’s ATP ranking is 166, Borges’ 47. Jaakko Stenroos / AOP
