CONCACAF Champions League: Seattle Sounders win title – Mexico dominance broken

Against UNAM Cougars

The Seattle Sounders became the first Major League Soccer team to win the CONCACAF Champions League. The club from the US West Coast prevailed 3-0 (1-0) in the second leg against UNAM Pumas from Mexico on Wednesday evening (local time) and thus secured the prestigious trophy for the first time.

Seattle thus broke the dominance of Mexican clubs, which had won all the titles in the continental federation’s “premier league” since the inaugural 2008/09 season. 22 years ago, the Los Angeles Galaxy became the last team from the USA to win what was then known as the CONCACAF Champions Cup. The Champions League for club teams from North and Central America and the Caribbean has existed for 13 years.

In front of a record crowd of 68,741 spectators at Lumen Field in Seattle, Peru international Raúl Ruidíaz made the preliminary decision with a brace (45th/80th minute). Nicolás Lodeiro (88th), who scored twice in the first leg to make it 2-2, scored the final score.
