More tenants of social housing in the earthquake area will receive a one-off compensation of €750. The compensation is intended as compensation for possible overdue maintenance. Due to uncertainty as to whether or not the homes would become part of the reinforcement task, maintenance has often been postponed. The postcode areas in which tenants are eligible for compensation have been expanded.

Social renting from private landlords
The scheme is for people who rented in the social sector on July 1, 2021. This means that the basic monthly rent was below the social rent limit when the rental contract was entered into.
Most tenants in the social sector rent through a housing association. For them, the subsidy was paid directly to the housing associations. The housing associations ensure that this subsidy is distributed fairly among tenants.

2nd application round
Some tenants already received the compensation in 2022. This year, more tenants will be eligible for the subsidy. The area of home improvement subsidies (for owners) has been expanded. The tenant scheme applies to the same area. That is why the subsidy is now reopening.
Some tenants who rent socially from a private landlord have not yet applied for the subsidy in 2022. They can still apply for it between January 21 and December 31, 2025.
Commitment
In September 2021, the Minister of the Interior and Kingdom Relations (BZK) agreed to investigate whether tenants who rent socially from private landlords can also receive a one-off compensation. This compensation is an elaboration of this.
