Comparing apples and oranges during Open Fruit Press Day of the Fruithof in Frederiksoord

The Open Fruit Press Day of the Fruithof in Frederiksoord on the Wednesday of the autumn holidays is starting to become a great tradition. On this day you can collect apples and pears yourself and then have them pressed into delicious fresh juice. The Fruit Press Day is a fun activity for young and old every year.

The old hand juice press is used especially for this day, where the juice making process can be followed step by step. The fruit is rinsed, finely ground, placed in camel hair sieve cloths and pressed into juice under great pressure.

The Fruithof in Frederiksoord is a unique orchard. There are a total of more than 800 trees of 550 different old varieties. All these apples and pears have their own characteristics, flavors and smells. They sometimes have nice names like ‘ Silk camisole ‘, ‘ Drenthe Bellefeleur ‘, or ‘ Fake Ice Bolt ‘. You can search for them, pick them up and taste them and compare the different flavors. Or you can take them home (for 30 cents per kilo) to make sauce or cake.

Expert pomologists

There are also guided tours for young and old on this day. Young fruit trees are sold. You can get advice about the care and maintenance of fruit trees. And if you want to know the name of the tree you have in your garden, take some apples or pears with you. A team of expert pomologists is ready to identify the fruit. Apples, pears, grapes and pasteurized apple juice are for sale in the fruit garden stall.

The Open Fruit Press Day is on Wednesday, October 25, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Entrance is free. The entrance to the Fruithof is next to the Museum de test colony in Frederiksoord. For more information, go to www.fruithof-frederiksoord.nl .
