Dilsen-StokkemThis Saturday a memorial activity took place in Limburg around Jürgen Conings, the soldier who was found lifeless in the Dilserbos a year ago after a long manhunt. No more than 30 people signed up. Everything went very serenely and without confrontations or interventions from the security forces.
On June 21, Conings was found in 2021 after he had thrown the country into turmoil for weeks by fleeing armed and hiding deep in the Dilserbos. Earlier, a commemoration was held at that location and now it was time again. The initiative would come from Thomas Boutens, a well-known figure at the extreme right and also a former colleague of Conings.
Two actions were announced on social media. The first was a commemoration in the Dilserbos. Last year, this location was briefly a sort of pilgrimage site, but the difficult location made this somewhat extinct. Those who wanted to attend were given an extensive route description, because without directions it is almost impossible to find the memorial site. To do this, you first have to follow a dirt road for miles and then take a separate forest path via a mountain bike route. In the past, arrows were placed, but they have since been removed. Those present walked in groups to the spot and commemorated Conings. There is talk of 25 to 30 people, including a number of Dutch people.
No problem
Politicians announced in advance that they were not aware of the action, but since the forest is a public place, there was no problem with the commemoration. The security forces also did not assert themselves, although they kept an eye on things from a distance. So it was an ordinary Saturday afternoon in the rustic Dilsen-Stokkem. Later in the day there would also be a barbecue in the north of Limburg, of course only for invited guests. Presumably some nice texts about Conings will be read.
wreaths
Several wreaths were laid on the memorial site, as well as a Flemish flag, flowers, a shirt with the inscription ‘Team Jürgen’ and a series of personal messages. In this way, his friends and followers show that they have not forgotten him. The serenity of the commemoration is in no way reminiscent of the enormous amount of resources with which the soldier was searched at the same location last year.
