Coming from BVB – Tigges: 1. FC Köln’s advertising despite the injury impressed me

Fee as “incentive”

Steffen Tigges should increase his attacking options at 1. FC Köln after moving from Borussia Dortmund. The 23-year-old offers “a lot of imagination for the future”, commented sporting director Christian Keller on the commitment. The native of Osnabrück was impressed that the “Effzeh” didn’t give up despite a fracture to his left ankle.

He experienced the Cologne style of play under coach Steffen Baumgart – the 50-year-old extended Monday to 2024 – last season “firsthand,” said Tigges in the “Kicker” interview and added with a laugh: “But it was not that I’ve only looked at FC in the past few months. However, I was very impressed that the club was so interested in me – and also placed a lot of trust in me when I was injured (in March; ed.).”

1. FC Köln wanted Tigges from BVB as early as 2021 – the conversation with Baumgart was decisive

According to reports, the Domstädter already had their sights set on the offensive man in 2021 before securing Tigges’ services this summer for a fee of 1.5 million euros. “At first I asked myself whether anyone would be interested at all, and I thought that it would probably be more difficult with a summer change. But Cologne stuck with it, which made me very happy. The conversation with Steffen Baumgart was enough.”

Tigges moved to Dortmund from his youth club VfL Osnabrück on a free transfer in 2019, where he made 15 professional appearances over 373 minutes last season and scored three times. Despite his “good role” at BVB, it was time for a change of scenery. “I didn’t say I had to go. I only wanted to give it a try if a club were to come along where everything fits. 1. FC Köln was that club.” Tigges described the fee as an “incentive”.
