Stu Rai 3 is broadcast at 21.20 Comedians Of Gabriele Salvatores. Released in 2021, the movie is taken from the play of the same name by Trevor Griffiths, which the director staged at the theater in 1985. In cast appear, among others, Alessandro Besentini and Francesco Villa by the comic duo Ale and Franz, Natalino Balasso e Christian De Sica.

Comediansthe plot of the movie

Former comedian Eddie Barni (Natalino Balasso) teaches stand-up comedy class attended by six aspiring actors. Comedians opens with preparation for the final show. The guest of honor is Bernardo Celli (Christian De Sica), great television comedian as well as Eddie’s old colleague.

The show is a tempting opportunity for each of them: Celli, in fact, will choose one to enroll him in his new prime time programme. The six actors are characters in search of an author, all dissatisfied with their lives both personally and professionally and they see competition as an opportunity for redemption.

The period preceding the debut is dotted with continuous arguments and tensions. The cause is to be found in the different personalities of the comedians. Filippo and Leo Marri (Alessandro Besentini and Francesco Villa) are two brothers who can’t find a common ground, but neither of them manages to abandon the other artistically. So they perform together, not without problems.

Samuele Verona (Marco Bonadei) is irritable, while Gio Di Meo (Walter Leonardi) is selfish and hypocritical, even if he hides behind the semblance of a welcoming and engaging person. Still, Michele Cacace (Vincenzo Zampa) is an actor with a weak personality and a submissive character; Giulio Zappa (Giulio Pranno), on the other hand, doesn’t careto internal disagreements within the group, but is also intolerant of everything.

Christian De Sica as a TV comedian

Adding fuel to the fire, Eddie’s teachings, according to which to make a perfect performance it is necessary to move away from stereotypes. The goal is not to make the audience laugh, but to delve into themselves to then transform his own melancholy into comedy. Not everyone agrees with this line of thought and the preparation of the show proves to be harder than expected, even in the face of conflicting opinions. Also, Patel, an Indian boy, comes into the company.

Between clashes and interruptions, the day of the debut arrives. Just before going on stage, the comedians meet Bernardo Celli. The actor takes advantage of Eddie’s absence to talk to the company. In a few moments, he destroys their already few certainties. He suggests the participants to go in a completely different direction than what their teacher suggested. According to Celli, the colleague points to a comedy that is too easy, almost boorish.

The six comedians are even more confused, as they are assailed by doubts: should they follow Celli’s or Eddie’s advice? Each goes its own way. Michele follows Eddie’s tips and tells his storyor that of a man from the South transplanted to the North. Samuele and Gio rely on Celli and rewrite the monologues by filling them with stereotypesfrom racism to sexism. And so on for the rest of the group.

The ending of Comedians

The show did not achieve the expected success. Once the curtain closes, it’s time for confrontation, but they shoulder the blame for each other. At one point, Celli and Eddie intervene. Bernando crushes every performance, but decides to give Samuele and Gio a chanceeven if you don’t seem particularly convinced.

Disappointment has a devastating effect on everyone else. Filippo and Leo Marri separate definitively, while Michele is still convinced that he wants to follow Eddie’s teachings. The latter asks Giulio why he staged a number bordering on sadism. The boy replies that he did exactly as he suggested: dig inside himself to bring out his worst side.

The film closes with an anecdote told by Eddie himself. During the Second World War, concentration camps had a space intended for the punishment of prisoners. For him this is the true depth of comedy. At this point, the teacher and the student respectfully greet each other. As he leaves, Eddie runs into Patel, who tells him a joke. Seeing some talent, he offers to attend his course.
