16 months after her last official match and later uterine surgery, the former tennis world list of Venus Williams gives her comeback on the WTA tour at the tournament in Washington DC at 45 years.
On Monday afternoon local time, the five-time Wimbledon winner in the US duel with Peyton Stearns will play the first main round game since she kicked off in Miami in March 2024.
With regard to her goals for the near future, Williams was mysteriously buttoned in a media round before the first serve in the US capital and thus fueled speculation about returning the upcoming US Open in New York.
“At the moment I’m at this tournament. But who knows: Maybe something else will come, but I don’t let myself be looked at the cards,” said the Olympic champion of 2000: “I think I know what I want to do, but I don’t necessarily want to talk about it.”
Washington is the first hard court preparation tournament for the US Open from August 24th. At the traditional last Grand Slam tournament of the year, the older sister of the former top player Serena Williams was eliminated in the first round during her three last appearances in Flushing Meadows between 2020 and 2023.
In 2000 and 2001, on the other hand, the Californian in New York won the title.
