Cody Gakpo scores the first Orange goal in Qatar, PSV rubs his hands

The whole of the Netherlands was cheering when Cody Gakpo headed in the 1-0 against Senegal on Monday evening. But an even louder cry must have been heard from Jaap van Baar, financial director of PSV. With a star role at the World Cup, the attacker seems untenable for the Eindhoven top club and can add a large amount in the very short term.

Less than three months ago, there was a major soap opera around the Eindhoven attacker. Leeds United had made an offer of thirty million euros with eleven million in possible bonuses.

The offer was rejected and not much later John de Jong left as technical director. The Supervisory Board was not satisfied with his performance and had hoped for a hit with Gakpo.

That hit seems to be coming, because exactly what PSV hoped for is happening in Qatar. Gakpo is a basic player for the Orange and was the savior on Monday evening by heading in the 1-0 ten minutes before the end. The icing on the cake of what is already a great season for the Eindhoven resident.

The Brabant football player started as an attacking midfielder in the base. After some changes just before time, he came to the forefront. From that position he was accurate on a pass from Frenkie de Jong. The goal literally and figuratively fell from the sky. Before that, Gakpo and the Dutch Elfal played an invisible match.

Statistics
The attacker was not so long ago compared to Messi in terms of his statistics. They don’t lie either. In 24 official games, the attacker scored thirteen goals and seventeen assists. His goal on Monday evening was also his fourth goal in the Dutch national team. The attacker only needed ten games for that.

Afterwards, Gakpo remained sober as usual. “I saw the ball coming and thought this is the time,” the attacker told NOS. It typifies the character of the Brabander.

Memphis Depay left for Manchester United in 2015 for 25 million euros. One year after his final breakthrough at the World Cup. The former PSV player chose to stay in Eindhoven for another year despite all the interest from abroad.

Although PSV did not think the offer of 30 million with bonuses was high enough, Gakpo also chose to continue playing for another year in the Philips Stadium. A golden choice because the absolute top is now waiting for the Eindhoven resident. Therefore, do not be surprised if this goal at the highest level doubles the amount of 30 million euros.
