Coach change at FC Barcelona: head coach Hansi Flick loses one of his most important employees.
As the ex-national coach confirmed, former Barca professional Thiago Alcántara will be leaving the Catalans’ coaching staff at the end of the season.
“We will miss him, but I understand that he has his own plans – and that’s completely fine. I hope that he can return one day because we need people like him,” said Flick about the 35-year-old, who also played for FC Bayern for several years during his playing career and had worked for Flick since autumn 2025.
Thiago has “an absolute top attitude” and is “an extraordinary person,” praised Flick. “He helped me a lot here at Barca.”
According to “Jijantes”, Thiago had already said goodbye to players and staff before Barca’s last game of the season last Saturday against FC Valencia (3-1).
He is moving to his hometown club CE L’Hospitalet, but will not work on the coaching staff there, but rather lead the team’s fortunes as a board member. His fellow campaigner there is another ex-Barca star, Jordi Alba.
Thiago ended his playing career at Liverpool FC in 2024. His CV includes, among other things, two Champions League titles and seven German and four Spanish championship titles.
FC Barcelona is betting on Hansi Flick for the long term
Flick’s own future at Barca has been finally clarified since last week. The 61-year-old’s new contract is dated until 2028 and also includes the option of an extension for another year until 2029.
The appreciation for Flick at FC Barcelona is now enormous. In the official announcement about his extension, the La Liga giants described the coach as “the architect of a victorious Barca”.
It continued: “And the Culers (that’s what the Barca fans are also called, editor’s note) are betting that many more successful chapters will follow.”
