Club rescuer Reinhard Rauball wants to remain president

Reinhard Rauball has been President of Borussia Dortmund for the third time since 2004, the last time he was re-elected for three years in 2019 without a dissenting vote. And he’s not thinking of quitting yet.

Reinhard Rauball can imagine another term as president of the Bundesliga soccer club Borussia Dortmund. The electoral committee of BVB would have to propose the longstanding league president and DFB vice-president again.

Rauball’s current term of office, who turns 75 this Saturday, ends in November 2022 – one month before his 76th birthday. “I’m completely healthy, I enjoy working for BVB every day. If nothing changes, I would be open to a discussion with the representatives of the election committee,” said Rauball in an interview with the “Ruhr Nachrichten”.

Dramatic rescue 16 years ago

Rauball’s masterpiece was the rescue of Borussia Dortmund over 16 years ago. The dramatic hours of March 14, 2005 will not be forgotten. Rauball and Hans-Joachim Watzke faced the angry creditors of the Molsiris Stadium Fund in Düsseldorf, it was all or nothing. In the end, 94 percent of those present approved the redevelopment plan.

“This time was extremely uncomfortable because no positive end could be foreseen over a longer period of time,” said Rauball. “To call the result of the vote a miracle would be a touch too high,” said Rauball later, but: “The dichotomy in which many were stuck between total loss and the prospect of saving at least some of the capital invested helped us a lot. ” The “clear growling in the hall” ceased. Also because Rauball and Watzke did not lead BVB to the brink of ruin themselves.
