At the beginning of the season it looked like Leon Goretzka was on the siding at FC Bayern. In the hot phase of the second half of the season, the wind turned properly. Bayern icon Lothar Matthäus advises the Munich to keep Goretzka.
“He lives his second summer – despite all these stories around him,” said Matthew at “Sky 90” about Bayern’s midfielder.
“If you saw it in Stuttgart – not because of the goal – but how greedy how bile he played football, I would think as Bayern Munich whether I might also extend Goretzka,” the record national player even suggested to keep the midfielder.
The 30-year-old contract on Säbener Straße expires in summer 2026. In the summer of 2024, Goretzka had been a very hot candidate for sales. According to media reports, sports director Max Eberl and Co. only wanted to get rid of the former international.
Goretzka’s farewell was also a topic in the further course because he initially did not play a role under coach Vincent Kompany and braised on the compensation bank.
FC Bayern also needs that “win the duels”
That has changed: Goretzka fought back to the team of the record champion, now have 28 competitive games and five goals. In the recent 3-1 win of Bayern at VfB Stuttgart, he brought Bayern to the winning road with his goal to 2-1.
“Funnily enough, I said to the coach at half -time that I would score such a goal,” commented Goretzka after the game at “DAZN” and showed through a good level with Kompany.
Goretzka is “an important player for Bavaria and has an impact on the cabin,” said Matthäus. The team not only needs beautiful players à la Jamal Musiala, but also “also those who tidy up there and win duels. Bavaria Munich is quite well positioned,” said the FC legend, who performed Konrad Laimer as another example.
