The Baskets Oldenburg celebrated their fourth victory in a row in the Basketball Bundesliga. Lower Saxony won dramatically against Alba Berlin on Sunday with 76:73 (36:36).
Chris Clemons, who had hardly managed anything up to that point, scored with 0.7 seconds before the end with a three-pointer and thus ensured the celebrated victory. The Baskets fans went crazy in the stands, yellow confetti flew onto the parquet.
It was an incredible end to a hard-fought encounter with four different quarters – and a happy ending for head coach Lazar Spasic’s team, which had been on the verge of giving up a 14-point lead in the fourth quarter.
Oldenburg is improving after a weak start
At the beginning, the Oldenburgers had an extremely difficult time against the good defense of the Berliners. Brian Fobbs only scored the first points for the Baskets after four minutes (3:10). The hosts had problems getting under Alba’s basket. And when they did, they sometimes misplaced free throws carelessly. After more than eight minutes, Michale Kyser scored the first layup for Lower Saxony (11:16); previously they had only scored from three-pointers. The capital city team deservedly led 20:11 after ten minutes.
The picture didn’t change much at the beginning of the second quarter: the capital defended aggressively – and had Jonas Matisseck and Moses Wood on the offensive, who sank three-pointers after three-pointers (11:26). Gradually, however, the Spasic team improved, also because they moved more and more aggressively towards the Berlin basket. The “Thunderbirds” caught up point by point – and Dakarai Tucker equalized with a three-pointer a few seconds before the half-time siren (36:36). The fans in the hall went wild.
Clemons makes the baskets cheer
And the high spirits of the Oldenburg supporters continued in the third period because their team continued to increase their throwing and rebound rates – and because Tomislav Zubcic and Nicholas Tischler in particular turned up the heat. With a three-pointer, Zubcic gave Baskets the first lead of the game (39:37, 22nd), Tischler with seven points in a row a little later for a twelve-point lead (55:43, 25th).
The score was 64:50 from Lower Saxony’s perspective going into the final quarter. But it only took three and a half minutes and the guests equalized because the baskets suddenly couldn’t do anything against the now more aggressive Alba defense. Jack Kayil scored with a dunk after a steal to make it 64:64. A battle of nerves began – in which Oldenburg had the upper hand thanks to Clemons.
