THEthe GrandTour Life is now Of Claudio Baglioni it was supposed to be the summer 2026 event. Everything was already ready to start on June 29th in Piazza San Marco in Venice. Instead the singer-songwriter had to give up, and the tour has been postponed to 2027. The reason behind the stop, also communicated by the organizers of the eventwas revealed by Claudio Baglioni himself with a video on his Instagram profile: acute interstitial pneumonia.
«On the occasion of my 75th birthday» on May 16th, the singer-songwriter said, «I caught the flua fairly traditional flu syndrome, one of those that are a little out of season.” However, since that flu no longer passed, «I decided to do some tests and in the end it turned out that it wasn’t just a simple flubut it was about an acute interstitial pneumonia». Which can quickly and significantly compromise the functionality of the lungs. Here are the causes, how the diagnosis is reached and how the disease develops.
What is acute interstitial pneumonia
Acute interstitial pneumonia is a rare form of interstitial lung disease characterized by an inflammationand sometimes by thickening and scarring, of lung tissue. Second Orphanetthe European reference portal for rare diseases, it is an idiopathic pathology (i.e. without an identifiable cause in the majority of cases) which affects healthy people and can rapidly progress to severe respiratory failure. Also the MSD Manual describes it as a rare, fulminant idiopathic lung disease characterized by diffuse alveolar damage.
What does “interstitial” mean?
To understand how the disease works, we must imagine the lung as a structure composed of millions of small alveolithe microscopic pockets where oxygen passes from the air into the blood. The interstitium is the thin tissue that supports these alveoli. When it becomes inflamed or damaged, oxygen exchange becomes less efficient and the body begins to receive insufficient quantities.
A disease that affects healthy people
Although sometimes the causes can be viral, bacterial or fungal infections or autoimmune diseases, or the intake of chemotherapy drugs, one of the most particular aspects of acute interstitial pneumonia is that it can appear without warning signs and without pre-existing lung disease. Second Orphanet the average age of onset is around 55 years oldeven if the disease it can occur at any age adult. Men and women appear to be affected with similar frequency. This characteristic contributes to making it a pathology particularly difficult to predict and, in many cases, also to be diagnosed in its initial stages.
Symptoms: when you are short of breath
The initial symptoms, such as also told by Claudio Baglionimay resemble that of a common respiratory infection. Fever, dry cough, tiredness and general malaise are often the first signs. Unlike what happens in most common pneumonias, however, breathing difficulty tends to get worse quickly. According to the MSD Manual the most characteristic symptom is dyspneathat is, the feeling of not being able to breathe enough. Over the course of a few days or weeks the oxygen level in the blood can decrease significantly.
How to reach the diagnosis
Since the symptoms may initially be confused with those of other respiratory diseases, diagnosis requires specialized tests. High resolution CT scan of the chest represents one of the main tools, because it allows you to identify the characteristic widespread alterations of the lung tissue. This may be accompanied by pulmonary function tests, blood tests, bronchoscopy and, in some cases, lung biopsy. Tests necessary for distinguish this pathology from other diseases which can cause acute respiratory failure and require different treatments.
Treatments and mortality rate
One of the reasons why acute interstitial pneumonia is considered a complex disease is the absence of a specific universally effective treatment. Treatment focuses primarily on respiratory support and controlling inflammation. However, in more severe cases oxygen therapy, mechanical ventilation and corticosteroid therapies may be necessary. According to the MSD Manualthe response to treatment is very variable and depends on the severity of the damage pulmonary disease and the speed with which treatment is started. And also for this reason the prognosis is often unfavorable, with a mortality rate greater than 50%.
Because recovery can take months
Orphanet and the MSD Manual agree in describing acute interstitial pneumonia as a potentially very serious pathologywhich can progress to severe respiratory failure and require prolonged hospitalization. Those who overcome the acute phase can recover a significant part of their lung function, but months of checks are often necessarypulmonary rehabilitation and gradual resumption of normal activities. And this is probably precisely the reason why, in the case of Claudio Baglioni, it was chosen postpone the entire tour for a year. When the ability of the lungs to guarantee the correct supply of oxygen to the body is compromised, recovery times cannot be forced. And even for those who are used to living in the spotlight, the priority becomes only one: get back to breathing effortlessly.
