Manchester City narrowly won the away game at Everton 1-0. The goal of the day was scored by youngster Phil Foden (82′) shortly before the end. The “Citizens” were able to win again this weekend after their defeat against Tottenham (2:3). The titleholders’ lead over Liverpool is now six points, but the Reds have played one game less.

Everton, threatened with relegation, did well for a long time and kept the game open. As the game progressed, City took control of the game, but often failed due to the strong Everton keeper Jordan Pickford before Foden redeemed the Guardiola team.

Emotional scenes before the game

There were emotional scenes before the game. Many spectators had brought banners and signs to Goodison Park stadium, declaring their solidarity with Ukraine. Man City players wore warm-up t shirts with the Ukraine flag and the inscription “No War”.

TV footage showed Ukraine’s Man City pro Oleksandr Zinchenko fighting back tears as The Hollies played the song “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother” over the stadium speakers. One of the lines in the 1969 ballad reads, “His welfare is my concern, no burden is he to bear.” (His well-being is important to me, he shouldn’t be a burden.) Everton pro Vitaliy Mykolenko was also visibly moved.

Zinchenko had spoken out angrily about the Ukraine conflict on Instagram during the week. “My country belongs to the Ukrainians and nobody will ever be able to appropriate it,” wrote the 25-year-old, who no longer makes his Instagram profile with 1.6 million followers publicly available.
