Cigarette causes explosion in home due to leaking gas tank: man (32) seriously injured Essen

EssenThere was an explosion in a house in Essen this morning. A 32-year-old resident was taken to hospital with severe burns. The house is heavily damaged.

The explosion happened at 8.15 am in a weekend house in the Ericalaan. “There was a buildup of gas, presumably from a leaking gas tank. The resident had lit a cigarette and then the house exploded,” says Patrick De Smedt of the Grens police zone. The 32-year-old man was taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening burns. The other 29-year-old resident has minor burns.

The fire brigade immediately arrived on the scene and is currently still working on ventilating the room. The damage to the home is significant. The house is uninhabitable due to smoke, fire and water damage and broken windows and doors. “A solution is being sought so that the residents have accommodation for tonight,” says De Smedt. Police are investigating the explosion, but for now it appears to be an accident.
