Christopher Nolan’s Fantastic Sci-Fi Film “Interstellar”

With “Interstellar” director Christopher Nolan (“The Dark Night”) created a spectacular, interplanetary dystopia in 2014. The plot: (post-)industrial society is on its last legs, natural disasters and food shortages are raging on earth and the continued existence of human life on the earthly home planet seems hopeless.

For this reason, humanity must set out in search of life on another planet. That would actually be a case for the US space agency NASA. The only problem: NASA doesn’t give anymore. At least not officially — because research continues in secret. A wormhole, for example, discovered half a century earlier near Saturn.

Top notch cast

Interstellar stars Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Chastain and Anne Hathaway — also starring Matt Damon, Casey Affleck, John Lithow and Timothée Chalamet. The film was screenplayed by brothers Jonathan and Christopher Nolan. And because such a dystopia naturally needs an appropriately opulent soundtrack, Hans Zimmer contributed the film music. Actually, Steven Spielberg should have directed it first, but he didn’t have time and had to hand over the project.

Whether you actually see the film as a masterpiece in a league with Kubrick’s work (which some actually claimed), see it as a dire prophecy for quite mundane problems like climate change, or just see it as a star-studded, entertaining blockbuster extravaganza: sci-fi fans should definitely have seen “Interstellar”. “Interstellar” is without a doubt a feast for the eyes – that was also the opinion of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which awarded the film an Oscar in the category “Best Visual Effects” in 2015.
