In the summer of 2024 Christian Streich made his office as Freiburg coach. Now he talks about how he was retired – and leaves a return open.
The change from the coaching chair to everyday life without football was not an easy step for Christian Streich. After his farewell to SC Freiburg in the summer of 2024, the 60-year-old initially got some distance with a bike tour, he said in an interview with the “Badische Zeitung”. “After that, everyday life came, and my usual work processes no longer existed. Sometimes I felt isolated or empty,” said Streich.
The long -time coach of the Bundesliga club described the changeover as “increasingly difficult”. “I always knew from Monday to Sunday where I belong. The everyday process was given. Now everything was different,” reports Streich. He received support from family, friends and confidants during this time. “Together we worked on recognizing the new opportunities and freedoms and implementing them,” he said.
He leaves open whether Streich will return to professional football. “I don’t know,” said the native of South Baden. “At the moment I am concerned with things that are new to me and have fun. I am excited to see where the trip takes me.” He currently does not want to be too present in public. Since his farewell to SC, he has rarely been shown, instead spent a lot of time while traveling.
Streich continues to follow the games of SC Freiburg – but not in the stadium, but from home. He still sees the games with a special look: “Because I still know most players very well. Every step, every behavior.” And because the club is more for him than just an employer: “Because it is my favorite club.”
