“It’s been so lonely without you here/Like a bird without a song/Nothing can stop these lonely tears from falling/Tell me, where did I go wrong?” Toni Cornell sang for her late father and grunge musician Chris Cornell. She appeared on James Corden’s Late Night Show to honor her father with the performance.
The song the lines come from is called Nothing Compares 2 U. It is said to have been one of Chris Cornell’s favorite pieces. It was originally written by Prince, but it made Irish singer Sinéad O’Connor famous.
Chris Cornell covered the track, which later appeared on his posthumously released album NO ONE SINGS LIKE YOU ANYMORE in 2020.
The entire album and the “Nothing Compares 2 U” cover were nominated for this year’s Grammys, but the Foo Fighters prevailed in both categories.
Toni Cornell recorded another version of the track with her father in 2018. The proceeds from the sale of the single went to the International Rescue Committee, an international aid organization for refugees and victims of war. This recently appointed the 17-year-old ambassador.
Cornell performed the song on Jimmy Fallon last year.
Chris Cornell passed away in May 2017 at the age of 52. He hanged himself in a hotel room, the role played by drugs and tranquilizers is not entirely clear. He became world famous as the singer of the band Soundgarden.
