The “World Festival of Horse Sport” – the Chio in Aachen starts on Friday. The best riders in the world compete under the eyes of thousands of horse fans for ten days. The WDR is there live in many competitions.
When does the CHIO take place?
The Chio in Aachen starts on June 27th and runs until July 6th. At the largest riding tournament in the world in Aachener Soers, 300 riders from 30 nations are expected this year, plus around 600 horses. The official partner country is Spain this year.
Almost 3.9 million euros in prize money will be awarded to the participants for all exams. Around 350,000 visitors are expected to go to the tournament.
What competitions are there?
At the CHIO there are competitions in five disciplines: jumping, dressage, versatility, vaulting and driving four. There is a brief explanation of the disciplines here:
When do the competitions take place?
- Let’s go with the Vaultingwho play their competitions from Friday to Sunday (June 27th-June 29th) in the Albert Vahle-Halle.
- The competitions of the Jumping rider take place from Tuesday to Sunday (July 1st – July 6th) in the main stadium.
- The Dressage competitions will be held from Wednesday to Sunday (July 2nd – July 6th).
- The Miversarity checks take place on two consecutive days: On Friday (July 4th) the dressage is in the dressage stadium first, in the evening the jumping in the main stadium. The following Saturday (July 5th), the railing leads over the off -road route in the Aachener Soers.
- Traditionally they have Quadruple her big appearance in Aachen. The competitions go from Thursday to Sunday (July 3rd – July 6th) and are held in the Fahrstadion, on the marathon route in the Aachen Soers and in the main stadium.
The highlights – the WDR is there live
As usual, the WDR Various competitions and events live. This year it is almost 16 hours alone on TV. There is also an extensive live stream on WDR.de.
One of the highlights of the tournament is always an elaborately staged Opening ceremony. The celebration on July 1st is – to match the partner country Spain – under the motto “Hola España”. A colorful Fiesta is planned – with flamenco, tapas and a live appearance of pop star Alvaro Soler. The WDR shows the celebration from 8:15 p.m.

The favorites
The Schwede Henrik von Eckermann and the Swiss top rider Steve Guerdat and Ben Maher start in jumping riding. In dressage, Isabell Werth in particular is again in focus. The top favorite also comes from Germany in the eventing competition: record Olympic champion Michael Jung.
