According to state news agency Xinhua, Li also said he wants a level playing field for Chinese investors in Italy. In addition, China wants to strengthen ties with Italy at a diplomatic level, including within global organizations such as the United Nations and the G20.

Italy has regularly praised Chinese investments in Europe, despite trade tensions between China and the European Union. Meloni’s office said she and Li agree on the importance of “constructive dialogue” on issues including trade and investment. Meloni also told Li that the security of global supply chains must be guaranteed, especially for industrial goods.

China recently also said it wanted to further expand cooperation with Spain. Spanish King Felipe paid a state visit to China earlier this month and was received by President Xi Jinping in Beijing. Madrid is also trying to reduce trade tensions between China and the EU.

At the G20 summit, Meloni also briefly met with new Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. She is Japan’s first female Prime Minister.
