Chinese leader Xi arrives in Bali, where he will meet with Biden during the G-20 summit

The Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived this Monday on the Indonesian island of balinese, where he will meet his American counterpart, Joe Biden, taking advantage of the celebration of the G20 Leaders Summit, according to the state chain CCTV. The plane has landed around 3:05 p.m. local time (8:05 a.m. Spanish peninsular time), according to the live broadcast of state media.

It will be their first face-to-face meeting as presidents, but not the first they have, since Biden and Xi met twice when the former was vice president of Barack Obama and the second, from Hu Jintao.

The meeting comes after months of secret negotiations and began to take shape in a call between the two leaders in July, according to US officials. Biden and Xi spoke for hours in July, amid tension over the impending visit to taiwan of the president of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, and at that time both highlighted the “value” that a face-to-face meeting would have, as the White House explained at the time.
