Chinese embassy criticizes German minister after comparing conflict in Taiwan with Russian invasion of Ukraine | Abroad

The German Green Minister was in New York on Monday for a conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. There she had made a comment about the relationship between China and Taiwan. Baerbock compared the situation to Russia’s “brutal war of aggression” against Ukraine. “If a larger neighbor invades a smaller neighbor, international law is violated. And of course that applies to China in these times too,” she added.

But that comment does not go down well with the Chinese embassy. The embassy’s statement states that Baerbock’s comment lacks historical knowledge and is inconsistent with the facts. “Taiwan is not a smaller neighbor of China, but a Chinese province. To equate the Ukraine issue with the issue in Taiwan is a deliberate distortion of the facts,” the Chinese embassy said.

In the statement, the Chinese embassy also criticized the recent visit of Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the United States House of Representatives. She visited Taiwan on Tuesday.
