The Chinese authorities are still not going to join the treaty between Russia and the United States on nuclear disarmament, as they consider it insufficient. As reported “RIA News”, Director of the Department of Arms Control of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China Fu Cong told reporters.

According to the Chinese diplomat, Russia and the United States, which possess the main stocks of nuclear weapons in the world, must legally secure an agreement not so much on the reduction of their arsenals, but on the irreversible destruction of such weapons.

Fu Cong added that his country would be happy to join the Russian-American talks if the nuclear arsenal is reduced to the level of the PRC.

In turn, Deputy Foreign Minister of China Ma Zhaoxu stressed that Beijing made a significant contribution to the statement published on January 3 by the “nuclear five” (Russia, the United States, China, Great Britain and France) on the inadmissibility of a war with the use of nuclear weapons. In a comment, published Xinhua news agency says that it was China that initiated the inclusion in the statement of a clause on not targeting nuclear weapons at each other or at another state. According to the Deputy Minister, the position of the “nuclear five” should become a new starting point, which will strengthen mutual trust and ensure global security on the planet.

Earlier, the press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov said that the joint statement of the leaders of the “nuclear five” emphasizes the need for a summit with the participation of permanent members of the UN Security Council, with the corresponding initiative in January 2020 was made by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
