According to the police, food was distributed by the church at a sports facility in Port Harcourt.
A police spokeswoman says people waiting early became impatient and began to push forward. At least 31 people were killed in the ensuing crowds. Seven more people were injured and taken to hospital.
Port Harcourt is the capital of the Nigerian state of Rivers and is located in the Niger Delta.
