Child (8) sustains burns from glue in fire barrel, community service for perpetrator

A 28-year-old man from Meppen has been sentenced to 100 hours of community service for seriously injuring an 8-year-old boy. The man threw PVC glue into a fire barrel. The child, who was standing by, suffered second and third degree burns.

The incident happened on April 3 last year at the neighbors of the 28-year-old man from Meppen. As the fire was smoldering, the man walked to the boy’s father’s shed and fetched a bottle. The boy walked with the man. Back at the barrel, the 28-year-old poured liquid from the bottle into the smoldering fire. “It exploded and fell on top of me,” the child later told police.

The man acted very carelessly and negligently by throwing flammable material into a fire, the judge ruled. The child suffered serious physical injuries as a result of his fault. The judge took into account that the man showed great remorse. The relationship with the victim and the parents has since been restored.

The sentence that the judge imposed on the man is equal to the demand of the Public Prosecution Service.
